Pierce Beach Park – Somerset

This little park along the shores of the Taunton River offers a little of everything. Here are a baseball field, a basketball court, and  a playground. The park offers just under a mile of walking paths that wind through a patch of woods and open fields. There are a couple sets of stairs that descend down to the beach. This strand can be narrow at high tide so it is best to visit at low tide for the beach walk. At the western edge of the beach is the mouth of The Creek. At low tide look for fiddler crabs scrambling across the beach. Because of its location, you will get a good view of the Taunton River to the south.

On the tenth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the new bridge spanning the Taunton River between Fall River and Somerset was dedicated to area veterans. The bike path that is on the north side of the bridge was then dedicated to Pvt. Michael E. Bouthot, a young resident of Fall River, who died in 2006 in the war in Iraq. The bridge and bike path officially opened a month later. The bike path in its entirety is just under a mile long starting at the intersection of Grand Army Highway and Brayton Avenue in Somerset. It then heads downhill to Riverside Avenue where there is a memorial to Pvt. Bouthot. The path then crosses the Taunton River on the bascule drawbridge. From the bridge you can see a power plant just north of Breed Cove and several miles beyond it. To the south you can see the old Brightman Street Bridge, Braga Bridge, Battleship Cove, Brayton Point, the Borden Flats Lighthouse, and the Mount Hope Bridge. After crossing the bridge the path curves around and under the bridge before concluding at Wellington Street in Fall River.

When I researched the Somerset area for hikes I did not come across much except for a You Tube link. Someone had posted a few videos of hikes they had took in various small parks and conservation areas. So without any need to say this was an exploratory hike. I also hadn’t planned on hiking today until a friend called me and asked to go for a short hike. We started from a small parking area and headed into the woods. We opted to go left first and followed the trail, occasionally seeing red blazes, for a while. We passed a few trails to the left that led up a hill. I was using GPS and at one point it seemed that we were leaving the conservation property. We turned around and started up the hill to an overlook. We then followed a trail down the other side of the hill until we came to a stream. The crossing proved to be a little challenging. After crossing the stream the trail then started looping back and we came to a second stream crossing. This crossing proved to be very challenging. We did manage to stay dry, only mostly due to waterproof boots. From this point we meandered a bit and found a second overlook before using the GPS to find our way out. For the most part this was a loop trail with some other options. I will be back in the Somerset area in the future to explore some of the other sites.

I did not find a trail map on-line for this site.
